The many faces of Gibbard's 'Wise Choices, Apt Feelings.' (Allan Gibbard)
Article Abstract:
Allan Gibbard in 'Wise Choices, Apt Feelings' attempts to provide a unified moral theory by focusing on norms that determine when anger and guilt are justified and on how the norms create minimal moral coordination. However, coordination is not necessarily or sufficiently determined by the norms governing justified anger and guilt. Gibbard assigns other moral sentiments a secondary role, but any may play a leading role at times. His narrow analysis of justified anger and guilt does not translate into a unified theory as he maintains.

The social and political sources of akrasia
Article Abstract:
Akrasia is a dissociative personality disorder resulting from a conflict of passions manifested through social habits influenced by laws, economic institutions, moral and religious beliefs, associations with other people and culture. It is exemplified by Daemona's forward-looking akrasia of greed and David's backward looking akrasia of anger. Daemona's akrasia results from a conflict between her Methodist beliefs and attractions to materials things. David's ensues from the difficulty of readjusting to civilian life.

Reconsidering the "Actual Contract" Theory of Political Obligation(*)
Article Abstract:
Analysis shows that actual contract theory may provide the best interpretation of the concept of political obligation. Arguments that the theory is invalid due to the absence of moral considerations do not hold up, as an underlying joint commitment has been established whenever an agreement is made. This generates corresponding obligations.
