First ladies demand rights
Article Abstract:
Women's levels of employment and education have improved worldwide since women's rights became an international issue in 1975 with the UN's first International Women's Conference, but progress has been slower than hoped. Poorer countries' economic structural adjustments and rising unemployment triggered by recession in industrial nations have affected women more than men. Increased civil and military strife in many regions have also adversely impacted the condition of women. Additionally, a backlash against policies designed to eradicate gender discrimination has led to a decline in women's equality.
