How different are postcommunist transitions?

Article Abstract:

The transition of postcommunist societies into democracies has not been easy, so much so that some of these countries still cannot be completely termed democratic in the full sense of the word. Notwithstanding the difficulties being encountered by these countries as they go about the business of democratization, they have to be credited for their efforts to turn democratic. The experiences of Western democracies serve to inspire these countries as they go about democratizing their political institutions and economic systems.

Georgia's identity crisis

Article Abstract:

The political crisis in Georgia in the post-Soviet era is a result of the disagreement between one group which places independence before democracy and another which believes that independence should be gained through democratic means. The democratization process was initiated in Georgia more as a response to perestroika than less because of any homogeneous development. The political rivalry between Eduard Shevardnadze and Zviad Gamsakhurdia further heightened the conflict between the two groups.
