Old soldiers never die

Article Abstract:

The influence of Chilean General August Pinochet continues in spite of his promise to the civilian Frei government to move aside in Jan 1990. The power of the military cannot be reduced without deep constitutional reform. Pinochet has retained much power due to his Senatorial seat, granted to him by a provision in the constitution that allows any president who has served for 6 years the right to be a senator for life. Opponents contend Pinochet was Head of State, not president.

Castro's leap of faith

Article Abstract:

The meeting between Fidel Castro and Pope John Paul II in 1996 highlighted a shaky relationship between the church and Cuba that the pope will visit for the first time. John Paul, an anti-communist, and Fidel Castro, Cuba's communist leader, have both been revolutionaries. The Pope wishes to prevent a violent war when Castro leaves office, and Castro realizes that Marxism is over and there is a real chance to shape the future.
