Reading, writing & arithmetic - an education in violence

Article Abstract:

All over the US, violent deaths in schools are escalating. Students come to school armed, and willing to use weapons. Many factors cause the violence including video games, films, current events and availability of fire arms. Of 1,004 students surveyed in a rural school in Texas, 42.3% said they had access to guns. Many incidents of school violence are recounted and ways to control the violence are presented. One high school in Indianapolis, IN organized Security Dads to help decrease violence among the students. Schools can not do the job alone. Parents too must learn to teach children that violence is not the only avenue of expression left to them.

The movement toward centered education

Article Abstract:

Africa-centered learning puts the black child into the information picture in a way similar to the way white children are made to feel that they are closely connected to the school subject. School districts which are re-writing the curricula to make it centered include Detroit, Baltimore, Indianapolis, Cleveland, Pleasantville, NY and Camden, NJ. American African scholars such as Asa Hilliard and Wade Nobles work with teachers and administrators in re-fashioning curricula. To correctly educate the American African child, all children in the US school system will have to be educated with a centered curriculum.
