Before black was beautiful: the representation of women in the Haitian National novel
Article Abstract:
Haitian National novelists helped to prepare the way for feminism through their interest in women's issues and the representation of black women in their works. The National novelists, who worked to create a distinctive Haitian literature, include Frederic Marcelin (1848-1917), Fernand Hibbert (1873-1928), and Antoine Innocent (1873-1960). Women characters, especially poor urban women, were used to present a normalized view of Haiti for a foreign audience, as well as to address issues of social justice.
