John Wayne's teeth: Speech, sound and representation in smoke signals and imagining Indians
Article Abstract:
Two films, one that is dramatic and the other, which is a documentary that were made for both insider and outsider audiences, are described to study particular tribal audience worldviews from outsider's perspective. Several ways that indigenous filmmakers engage in passionate research by re-contextualizing earlier images, texts, oral narratives, and songs are outlined.

Bakhtin's barbershop: Film as a folklorist
Article Abstract:
Barbershop that was a very successful urban comedy and reflects folkloristic concerns within a subject matter is discussed. An argument that Barbershop, in the process of accomplishing its principal task of making comic entertainment, also effects a representation, and indeed, an interpretation of the African-American barbershop as a particular folkloric space.

International factors in the growth and evolution of Hungary's national sound film culture, 1929-33
Article Abstract:
The early 20th-century origins of sound motion pictures in Hungary were partly based on the perception that films were an international medium. Films from other countries were freely exhibited, multiple languages were permitted, and Budapest became an international motion picture center.
