Bhutan in 1997: striving for stability
Article Abstract:
National security was the central issue in Bhutan's politics in 1997, with the southern Bhutanese problem dominating National Assembly sessions and internal political stability being one of the major thrusts of the 8th Five Year Plan. The situation in Southern Bhutan has stalled political and economic development, with no immediate solution on hand. At the same time, Bhutan has to grapple with tenuous relations with India owing to the issue of the United Liberation Front of Assam and Bodo insurgents, and the growing Sharchogpa ethnic consciousness that may escalate into a major problem.

Nepal and Bhutan in 1998: two Himalayan kingdoms
Article Abstract:
Nepal and Bhutan's affairs in 1998 were dominated by economic and political issues, although there were more positive developments in the latter. Factional fights among political parties were the order of the day in Nepal, as ideological and policy differences continued to undermine both political and economic stability. These trends were in stark contrast to those in Bhutan, where political and economic conditions are relatively normal. In fact, Bhutan's economy showed a remarkable improvement as reflected in an increase in GDP and a reduction in the rate of inflation.

Bhutan in 1994: will the ethnic conflict be resolved?
Article Abstract:
Ethnic strife between Bhutan's Buddhist community in the north and Nepali Hindu immigrant community in the south continued to wrack the country in 1994. Democratization at the block and village levels was one of the most significant improvements in the country during the year, giving village councils the right to decide on development priorities without consulting district commissioners. Although there were significant improvements in the economy, dissident activies adversely affected development efforts in 1994.
