Burma's economic performance under military rule: an assessment
Article Abstract:
Economic conditions in Myanmar have not improved under the military regime of the State Law and Order Restoration Council. To draw international support particularly from ASEAN member countries and to attract foreign investments, the government undertook reforms. However, instead of economic growth and prosperity as claimed in government reports, the people are burdened with rising prices of rice and other basic goods. As the country continues to be import-dependent with most of the goods coming from China, it faces a growing deficit in the balance of trade and payments.

Reflections on a visit to Burma
Article Abstract:
The Burmese people continue to suffer under the military regime of the State Law and Order Restoration Council. Economic conditions have not really improved, contrary to government claims of prosperity. Infrastructure projects and facilities to attract foreign investments and to promote tourism were done using forced labor. Despite the election victory of the National League for Democracy in 1990, political rights are restricted while opposition leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, is under house arrest.
