Macroeconomic performance and external stocks on small open economies: the Caribbean experience
Article Abstract:
External shocks, terms of trade and increases in interest rate have negative effects on the macroeconomic performance of Caribbean countries. Inflation and inefficient domestic economic management during the 1980s led to a decline in social infrastructure and economic downturn. Caribbean countries should have reduced their budget deficits to controllable levels to prevent macroeconomic decline. Strategic economic policies should have been enforced by the government to regulate high inflation and control external debt.

Guyana: from cooperative socialism to economic liberalization and growth: 1976 - 1994
Article Abstract:
An analysis of the failure of cooperative socialism in Guyana reveals that there is a need for keeping budget deficits under control, monetary restraint should be practiced and that 'market friendly policies' should be implemented. Guyana is characterized by poor economic conditions stemming from an unstable political climate. The only way to make liberalization work in the country is by discouraging government interference in markets that work reasonably well and by encouraging investment in human capital.

Dependency burden and savings: a new approach to the old query
Article Abstract:
A variation of a multivariate causality test created by Granger-Sims-Geweke was used to assess the relation between aggregate saving rates and dependency rates. Much debate has been caused by previous studies though no conclusive empirical evidence has been generated. Results confirm the theory that dependency burden influences aggregate savings rates. However, some issues remain unresolved, including findings of Leff (1964) concerning savings in developing countries.
