China in 1996: achievement, assertiveness, anxiety
Article Abstract:
Conflicting economic, political and foreign relations trends were observed in China in 1996. The economy continued to perform strongly, with GDP growing at a rate slightly below 10%. In contrast to the rapid pace of the economic transformation, the political system remained unchanged. The only notable development in the political front was the central party leadership's attempt to restore firm Communist Party dictatorship. With regard to international relations, China adopted a more aggressive stance that at times bordered on recklessness.

China in the Asean regional forum
Article Abstract:
Repercussions from the emerging power of China in the post-cold war era have received the most attention from political analysts who are monitoring the new security organization called Asean Regional Forum. This is because of China's size, substantial population, numerous borders shared with other nations, strategic nuclear capability and the numerical superiority of its armed forces. China also has a history of resorting to armed force with neighboring states on a number of incidents since 1949.
