Chinese and Filipino seafarers: A race to the top or the bottom?
Article Abstract:
Significant similarities and differences are present among Chinese and Filipino seafarers in terms of age, rank, family backgrounds, social status, work experiences, practices in maritime education and training, recruitment, pay and trade union affiliations. Although there is some divergence in the seafarers' characteristics in both countries, there is increasing convergence in linkages with the global maritime labor market.

Caste as a sacrificial organization is limited mainly to the ritual sphere in modern India. The significance of sacrifice in the contemporary socio-political context is examined and its transformation is analyzed paying attention to the role of village people's agency in rural Orissa.
