Colonialism, indigenous elites and the transformation of cities in the non-western world: Ahmedaban (western India), 1890-1947
Article Abstract:
This article discusses the political activity of indigenous elites under colonial rule. The author, focusing on the city of Ahmedabad, contests the assumption that colonial governments solely reshaped the physical and social environments of their colonies, and argues that the indigenous elite of Ahmedabad were involved in policy change and used colonial government to their advantage.
