Constitutional reform in a repressive state: the case of Burma
Article Abstract:
The ruling military State Law and Order Restoration Council, (SLORC), has been asked by the UN General Assembly to restore democracy in Burma, but is adamant in refusing to hand over power to the people. The UN Human Rights Council has criticized the continued imprisonment of Burma's democracy leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, and is concerned about the human rights abuses of political prisoners by the Burmese military. The SLORC intends to strengthen itself by drafting a new constitution that will make it legal.

Theories, paradigms, or models in Burma studies
Article Abstract:
A review of the theories, paradigms and models in Burmese studies from 1962-1988 reveals the top-down nature of government control and the resultant political and economic decline of such control. Since 1962, there has been alternate tightening and loosening of central control but in the long run, control has grown in a ratchet effect. Burmese studies should focus more on the prevailing human rights violations in Burma instead of treating such abuses as part of Burmese society's cultural traditions.
