Local politics in Taiwan: democratic consolidation
Article Abstract:
The democratization of the political process in Taiwan is in the consolidation phase whereby new rules and institutions are being established at the local level to protect democratic gains. Democratic consolidation removes the vestiges of the authoritarian system that are incompatible with democratic governance. The passage of two local autonomy laws, namely the Province and County Autonomy Law and the Special Municipal Autonomy Law, underscores the level of democratic consolidation in Taiwan's local politics.

Taiwan in 1994: managing a critical relationship
Article Abstract:
Taiwan's strained relations with mainland China dominated domestic politics in 1994. Alarmed with its growing dependence on the mainland market, the Kuomintang government sought for a diplomatic breakthrough. Taiwan saw itself struggling with two clashing tendencies: economic integration with the People's Republic of China and political/diplomatic independence. It scored major achievements during the year, however, with the restraint of subethnic conflicts and the peaceful elections.
