Dissolving boundaries: Assimilation and allosemitism in E.A. Dupont's Das alte Gesetz (1923) and Veit Harlan's Jud Suss (1940)
Article Abstract:
Continuities are examined between Weimar and Nazi cinema through Veit Harlan's 'Jud Suss' and E.A.Dupont's 'Das alte Gesetz', which have formal and structural similarities despite varying concepts and agendas, stemming from their approach to Jewish assimilation. It is observed that the fluid, permeable boundaries shown in the films consist of Jewish assimilation and the underlying allosemitism explains the representations of sexuality and the parallels between films with such different origins and intents.
