Between God and Gibson: German mystical and romantic sources of The Passion of the Christ
Article Abstract:
The movie, 'The Passion of the Christ', starring Mel Gibson, though claimed to be based on Gospel events, in reality, depicts revelations attributed to German nun Anna Katharina Emmerich, authored in fact by the Romantic poet Clemens Brentano. The source is pursued from its origins from German Romanticism to its revival by Hollywood cinema and expresses concern about the distortion of the Gospel by self-anointed prophets and the lack of defense by religious and secular scholars.
