Elite public opinion and nuclear weapons policy in India
Article Abstract:
The Kroc Institute for International Peace commissioned a study to gauge elite public opinion on India's nuclear arms program. Majority of the respondents expressed support for India's policy of neither renouncing or acquiring nuclear weapons while advocating global disarmament. However, the study showed that many of India's elite are not preoccupied with the nuclear debate. It suggests that public support the India's nuclear program may change if neighboring countries officially end their respective nuclear programs.

The stratosphere's the limit: India addresses the Montreal Protocol
Article Abstract:
India aims to abide by the Montreal Protocol, which calls for the control and eradication of ozone-depleting substances (ODS) by the year 2000. However, the government's effort is being hindered by lack of funds and inadequate technology. As India improves its social and economic conditions, collective action against ODS is also likely to solicit less support. Essentially, lack of public support may prove to be the biggest stumbling block in implementing the ODS phaseout program.

Poverty, development, and participation in India: a progress report
Article Abstract:
The Jawahar Rozgar Yojana and the Integrated Rural Development Programme are two of India's social programs aimed to uplift the economic and social well-being of the rural poor. Evaluation of the two programs reveals that inequalities in endowments hinder the success of the programs. 'Panchayats' must be made to become more responsive to the needs of the rural poor. The poor, on the other hand, must realize their collective strength in a decentralization.
