Janotus de Bragmardo in the limelight ('Gargantua,' ch. 19)
Article Abstract:
The scene in 'Gargantua' by Francois Rabelais in which Janotus de Bragmardo asks Gargantua to return the bells of Notre Dame suggests that Rabelais believed that humor could be used to combat intolerance. Janotus's oratory is defective according to Ciceronian standards, but he is stylistically inventive and effective as a farce actor. Wit operates at several different levels in the scene.
