Indigenous trade and European economic intervention in North-West Borneo c. 1860-1930
Article Abstract:
The intervention of the Europeans in Northwest Borneo and consequent importance of colonial products such as rubber, tobacco, tea and coffee did not mean that pre-existing trade was usurped. Such trade continued and became more complex and responsive to the market. The markets of Hongkong and Singapore were very interested in luxury jungle products. Immanuel Wallerstein's paradigm on the expansion of the capitalist economy may need to be revised.
