Bad sushi or bad merchant? The 'dead fish poisoning incident' of 1852
Article Abstract:
This article examines the political and social issues behind the imprisonment of a wealthy merchant in Japan during 1852 after several people of his village had died as a result of eating bad fish. The author maintains the merchant, involved in a land reclamation program, was held responsible due to economic motivation of the villagers and politicians, who confiscated his wealth and feared the possible economic changes related to the land project.
