Japanese electoral and political reform: role of the young Turks
Article Abstract:
Japan's 1993 general elections saw the formation of a coalition government composed of several opposition parties, effectively putting to an end the Liberal Democratic Party's (LDP) long-standing dominance of Japanese politics. The opposition victory at the 1993 polls can be attributed to the failure of the LDP to address the problem of political corruption and the rise of several junior politicians to prominence for strongly advocating reforms within their own parties.

Party identifiers in South Korea: differences in issue orientations
Article Abstract:
The choice of political party by South Koreans depends on voters' education and age. Survey results show that those who are young and highly educated are more likely to support opposition parties and are more demanding of democratic reform than those who are old and less educated. Democratic Party identifiers are more pessimistic of the future of their country and are more suspicious of their political leaders' motives than Democratic Liberal Party identifiers.

South Korea in 1995: tremors of transition
Article Abstract:
South Korea's democratization was evident in 1995. Former Pres. Chun Doo Hwan was arrested in Dec. 1995, for allegedly leading a rebellion in 1979, which enabled him to seize power. However, the collapse of a Seoul department store in Jun. 1995 and the slush fund controversy involving former Pres. Roh Tae Woo clearly showed the structural corruption that has long prevailed in South Korean government.
