Spanish Epic and Hispanic ballad: The Medieval Origins of the Corrido
Article Abstract:
Corridos and romances both are ballads and both still exist in the Hispanic oral tradition where the corrido highlights the essential role of borders and border conflicts as an ideal seed-bred for epic and epico-lyric adventures recreated in narrative verse. In the thematic agreements between the medieval epic, its genetic offspring, the Hispanic ballad and the corridos are strongly suggestive of an unbroken, ultimately relationship.

Moses Platt and the regeneration of "Barbara Allen."
Article Abstract:
A version of the British ballad 'Barbara Allen' sung in 1933 by Moses Platt, a septuagenarian black man in the Southern US, illustrates some of the changes that can occur through oral transmission. These changes include importation of elements from other songs, variation of words through folk etymology, disruption of narrative sequence, abrupt shifts in point of view and heightened emotion.

A review of one's own: a response to Omidsalar
Article Abstract:
Mahmoud Omidsalar's characterization of researches in oral performance of Arab epic singers is occasionally erroneous and incomplete. The Arab practice of sira is an indigenous genre with some characteristics relevant to European literatures, but involves complex categories of listeners, purposes, and types. Different oral epic traditions show differing cohesiveness and episodic structure.
