Bangladesh in 1994: democracy at risk
Article Abstract:
Bangladesh's parliamentary democracy was threatened with dissolution in 1994 because the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and the opposition failed to reach a consensus on the establishment of a caretaker government during elections. On the economic front, the government remained committed to economic liberalization and reforms. Foreign policy revolved around settling disputes with India and Myanmar, inviting more foreign investors into the country and participating in UN peacekeeping missions.

Political unrest and democracy in Bangladesh
Article Abstract:
The 22 months of political unrest and violence in Bangladesh between 1994 and 1996 were caused by the resignation of PM Begum Khaleda Zia and the rise to power of a nonpartisan caretaker government. Both resulted from claims that the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party was fixing elections. The unrest and violence that followed have promoted fear among Bangladeshis that future impasse between government and opposition ill have the same results.
