Russia and Asia in 1992: a balancing act
Article Abstract:
Russia's foreign policy and diplomatic relations with Asian countries were examined in view of its political and economic problems. Russia is finding it difficult to develop a coherent foreign policy because of its day-to-day economic difficulties. Russian foreign policy makers are divided into pro-Western, anti-Western and neutral camps. Different government ministries are also at odds over foreign policy. The current status of Russia's relations with China, Japan, the Koreas,India, Indochina and the countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations were discussed.

Russia in Asia in 1994: an emerging East Asian power
Article Abstract:
Russia sought to forge political, trade and economic relations with Asia's rapidly growing economies in 1994, realizing the value of enhanced ties with these emerging regional and international powers. In 1993, Russia's trade with 22 Asian countries added up to nearly $20 billion, increasing by $5 billion from 1992, despite a 24% decline in Russia's worldwide trade during the period. Russia's efforts to improve relations with Asian countries are expected to secure its position as an Asian power.

Russia and Asia in 1995: bold objectives and limited means
Article Abstract:
Russia proceeded with its plan to expand its ties with Asian countries in 1995. Its foreign policy reflects not only its desire to maintain its self-defined big-power status but also its intention to explore greater economic opportunities in the continent. Russia, however, has yet to fully enjoy the opportunities provided by growing regional cooperation in Asia.
