Nepal in 1997: political stability eludes
Article Abstract:
Political stability remained elusive for Nepal in 1997, with three shaky coalition governments successively taking the reins during the year but failing to institute any firm policy or direction. The second Parliament was characterized by internal strife within parties as well as unprincipled maneuvering. The law and order situation continued to be unwieldy, aggravated by the increase of Maoist violence in some underdeveloped areas in the west. Nepal is seen to remain politically unstable unless a national leader who can transcend partisanship assumes position.

Nepal in 1996: experimenting with a coalition government
Article Abstract:
There was much speculation in Nepal that the coalition government composed of Nepali Congress, Rstriya Prajatantra Party and Nepal Sadbhabana Party would undergo changes. At the end of 1996, however, the coalition had succeeded in signing the Mahakali River Treaty with India which solved the controversy about water resources. Nepal's economic condition also improved as evidenced by increases in exports, investments, joint ventures, foreign aid and GDP. Despite the economic upsurge, however, the needs of the masses were ignored.
