North Korea between collapse and reform
Article Abstract:
Three scenarios that North Korea is likely to tread in the near future are investigated, namely, reform, collapse and stability. Despite suffering a collapse of its economy in the 1990s and witnessing hordes of its people starve, North Korea has managed to muddle through, a situation that is predicted to prevail for a considerable time even if economic and social conditions continue to decline. Under the leadership of Kim Jong Il, muddling through would involve soliciting foreign aid, bargaining with its military and nuclear products, making unofficial, insignificant changes in the economy, and waiting for a more favorable international environment.

The process leading to the establishment of diplomatic relations between South Korea and the Soviet Union
Article Abstract:
A variety of factors contributed to the elimination of hostilities between South Korea and the Soviet Union in 1990. There had been limited progress towards peaceful relations at the height of the Cold War in the 1970s primarily because of the Soviet's perception of South Korea as an imperial ally of the US. With the ascendance of Soviet's Mikhail Gorbachev in 1985, relations became more practical and less dogmatic in terms of socialist conceptions. The Soviet acknowledged the positive effect of US military presence in the Korean Peninsula in preserving peace in the region.
