On the absence of privately owned, publicly traded corporations in China: the Kirby puzzle
Article Abstract:
The failure to establish a single privately owned, publicly traded corporation (PPC) in mainland China, despite the promulgation of China's Company Law in 1904, has puzzled modern-day scholars. An analysis of Chinese revenues reveals that the collection of keijuan zashui, or discretionary fees, is a traditionally accepted fact of life in China. This practice has prevented Chinese family firms from reorganizing themselves into corporations which will allow the government to extract more profits as demanded by the law. As a result, corporations did not thrive in China.

A great leap forward for modern Chinese art history? Recent publications in China and the United States - a review article
Article Abstract:
The books 'Art and Artists of Twentieth Century China,' 'Ershi Shiji Zhong Guo Hua: Chuantong de Yanxu yu Yanjin' and 'Shanghai You Hua Shi' focus on the field of modern Chinese art history. These are indicative of a new discourse about art that is emerging out of the changing political, social and cultural context in which art is produced. This new type of art is also illustrated through a chronicle of the history of oil painting in Shanghai.
