The Threat to Agents' Turf

Independent insurance agents are fighting hard to maintain their traditional markets. Several independent insurance agents' associations, both state and federal, are under investigation by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to Examine potential antitrust activity. Independent agents are fighting expansion of personal lines sales into supermarket chains in Texas. They object to five dollar grocery gift certificates being given to customers who have their insurance policies compared. Bank entry into insurance is the subject of much controversy. Independent Insurance Agents of Massachusetts (IIAM) are asking for an investigation of a Cape Cod bank that has opened insurance offices in three of its branches. IIAM feels the bank is operating against existing state laws. Wisconsin banks have been selling insurance along with commercial and consumer loans. Conflict of interest regulations have been established. Banks and insurance is a reality. Agents will have to become more sophisticated in order to get their share of business.
