Philip B. Yampolsky, 1920-1996
Article Abstract:
Philip Boas Yampolsky, grandson of famed anthropologist Franz Boas, died at the age of 75. He was a scholar of Zen Buddhism and his last publication on the subject is 'Letters of Nichiren,' which came off-the-press in 1996 and is a sequel to 'Selected Writings of Nichiren.' Yampolsky was the former Director of the C.V. Starr East Asian Library of Columbia University where more than 600,000 volumes in Chinese, Japanese, Korean and other languages are housed.

Restoration or transformation? 'Trapos' versus NGOs in the Democratization of the Philippines
Article Abstract:
This article examines the role of civil society in the democratization of the Philippines. The author argues civil society has been prevented from playing a key role in the consolidation of democracy by traditional actors in politics who have used their power to sabatoge new participatory roles for civil society.
