Phones as instruments of betrayal in Alfred Hitchcock's 'Bon Voyage' and 'Aventure Malgache.'
Article Abstract:
Telephones are portrayed as instruments of betrayal and manipulation in the films 'Bon Voyage' and Aventure Malgache' by Alfred Hitchcock. The phone, which should be a means of communication, instead suggests the difficult nature of human interaction. 'Bon Voyage' and 'Aventure Malgache' were French-language films made in 1944 as tributes to the French Resistance, but the telephone theme connects them with other Hitchcock films.

Alfred Delvau's dictionaries: vehicles of lexical and sociocultural change in Second-Empire Paris
Article Abstract:
Two slang dictionaries compiled by Alfred Delvau (1825-1867) provide insight into Parisian popular culture and its relationship to literary texts during the Second Empire. Delvau's dictionaries represent an effort to resist attempts by the government of Napoleon III to enforce a bourgeois cultural imperialism. The symbiotic relationship between popular and elite culture is suggested by Delvau's work.
