Physician licensure and the quality of care: the role of new information technologies
Article Abstract:
Profiling of individual physicians and the development and dissemination of practice guidelines may take the place of licensure in monitoring the quality of physicians' services. Thus, efforts are underway to develop standards with which physicians' practices can be compared. Such practice guidelines, which are based on the knowledge of the effectiveness of medical practices and procedures, provide recommendations for physicians about the proper use of medical services. Prior developments in physician profiling have demonstrated its potential in improving the quality of medical care.
