Private acts/public policy: Alfred Kinsey, the American Law Institute and the privatization of American sexual morality
Article Abstract:
Alfred Kinsey's 1948 study 'Sexual Behavior in the Human Male' and the American Law Institute's model penal code, based on the study, paved the way for privatizing sexual morality and making society more rational. The study exposed the hypocrisy prevalent in moral codes of the early 20th century, and revealed the prevalence of sexual behavior previously thought to be abnormal. Kinsey's study deals with sex as a private act, while various public forms of sexuality, such as pornography, voyeurism and exhibitionism, are left untouched upon.

Anecdote and the painting of George Bellows
Article Abstract:
A brief review on George Bellows' handling of smallness as an 'anecdotal mode' is done to suggest that 'anecdote' might function both negatively and positively, and to show that this mode becomes particularly problematic when applied to city scenes. The difficult movement between the varying form and content of the areas of New York emphasizes the problematic status of anecdote in paintings of urban life during the period.

Alabaman painter Roger Brown's work entitled 'Two Couples Viewing the Spectacle of Erosion at Providence Canyon Near Plains, Georgia' deals with ex-Pres. Jimmy Carter's hometown and displays the artist's skillful merging of the fantastic and realistic. Brown's work resembles pop art but it transcends this genre by its individualism. His imagery is compelling and highly personal.
