Projections on blank space: landscape, nationality, and identity in Thomas Mann's 'Der Zauberberg.'
Article Abstract:
The 'Snow' chapter of Thomas Mann's "The Magic Mountain" provides the imaginary geography where Hans Castorp, the novel's protagonist, discovers his identity. Mann's blank wall of snowstorm shows a metaphysical geography of the Alps, full of myths and quests. Mann's empty space serves as the setting against which the book's hero and Germany must determine the shape of their character.

Cocks, balls, bats, and banjos: masculinity and competition in the bluegrass music of Bill Monroe
Article Abstract:
Bill Monroe's bluegrass music in the 1940s and 1950s expressed southern manhood as a combination of horse-racing, cock-fighting, baseball and other traditional recreations. Musical competitions were common features of bluegrass, and Monroe constantly attempted to position himself onstage and off as a dominant presence.
