Relocating the U.S. forces in South Korea: Strained alliance, emerging partnership in the changing defense posture

Article Abstract:

The process of realignment of the US forces in South Korea since 2004 is examined from a domestic viewpoint and also in the larger strategic context of military transformation undertaken through the Pentagon's Global Defense Posture Review. The impact of this deployment of the US forces on security and peace in the region is discussed, focusing on the growing partnership between the US and the Republic of Korea (ROK) in the midst of strained alliance relations resulting from the changing defense posture.

Japan's Host Nation Support program for the U.S.-Japan security alliance: Past and prospects

Article Abstract:

The Host National Support program (HNS) is Japan's significant contribution to U.S.-Japan security alliance to which Japan was contributing mainly financially. The past of the HNS which involved the basic principle of bilateral cost-sharing about the stationing of U.S. forces in Japan are examined, while discussion and analysis of the present issues and prospects for the next Special Measures Agreement (SMA) and the future are explored.

The revitalised Philippine-U.S. security relations: a ghost from the Cold War or an alliance for the 21st Century

Article Abstract:

The security relationship between the U.S. and the Philippines after 9/11 is significantly different from the ones it shared during the Cold War. The present Philippine-US security relationship is temporary formed solely for the purpose of developing the armed forces of the Philippines to strengthen their counterterrorism ability and to foster the interoperability between the armed forces of the two nations.
