Rivals and rituals in Jambi, south Sumatra (1858-1901)
Article Abstract:
Political rituals strongly affected relations between the Dutch colonial government and the sultanate of Jambi in southern Sumatra between 1858 and 1901. These rituals most often took place when a new sultan was installed and he would meet with the Dutch governor-general's representatives. Places of residence, official embassies and flags were important elements in these rituals. For the Dutch, the rituals reinforced their hegemony. For the Jambians, the rituals wordlessly conveyed their desire for a reality in which contact with colonial rulers would be minimized.

The volatile state in Southeast Asia: evidence from Sumatra, 1600-1800
Article Abstract:
This article examines why the state of Sumatra was so volatile, with short cycles of rise and decline, between 1600-1800. The author, maintaining rulers' power depended on control over people rather than land, argues Sumatra was structurally volatile because tension existed over the ideology of royal power and egalitarian principle and village autonomy.
