Robert Pen Warren's Band of Angels at fifty
Article Abstract:
Robert Pen Warren's novel 'Band of Angels' first published in 1955 is reread fifty years later in 2005, and it is seen that the humiliation of African American troops by their Union comrades during the Civil War, the replacement of slavery with scarcely disguised form of peonage and the conspiracy of silence in the face of systematic violence and intimidation, all have parallels in contemporary times, mainly due to racism. Will, action and formation of identity in a world of radical uncertainty are emphasized in the novel.

Regional differences in the antebellum US created distinctive free African American populations with their own characteristics, values and strategies for advancement. Regional identity was significant in African American business history and the circumstances of the Upper South resulted in the adaptation of the free African American enterprise to serve the community through barber shops and also through large African American owned corporations.

A history of the William T. Johnson and Family Memorial Papers
Article Abstract:
The history of the Memorial Papers of William T. Johnson survive as a legacy of a prominent African American family that gives a rare view into the day-to-day life in a particular place and time in old Mississippi from the individual viewpoint of a free African American exercising what freedom he enjoyed. The format and content of the writings suggest a public intention, like an almanac, including comments on the weather and small drawings.
