Sanitizing empire: Japanese articulations of Korean otherness and the construction of early colonial Seoul, 1905-1919
Article Abstract:
The interconnected logic of Japanese discourse in the various constructions of early colonial Seoul illustrates the ethnographic of Korean manners and customs, the enumerative of urban sanitation and hygiene, and the invitational of the modern colonial city. Japanese colonial policy aimed to incorporate Koreans into a long-term program of imperial assimilation and a productive labor force for colonialist development only helped to justify colonial rule.

The Japanese colonial state and the dissolution of the late imperial frontier economy in Taiwan, 1886-1909

An analysis of Nanzhuang Incident of 1902 as a place, space, and event focuses on the global processes within an East Asian context and analyses how they affected the structures and practices of the frontier zone's economy. The Nazhuang Incident was ignited by an unresolved dispute between indigene tribes and Japanese camphor capitalists over mountain fees and rights to forest resources.

Cultural brokerage and interethnic marriage in colonial Taiwan: Japanese subalterns and their aborigine wives, 1895-1930
Article Abstract:
Political marriages were a Japanese response to the Qing legacy of ethnic segregation policies in Taiwan's foothills and mountain ranges, from 1908 through 1914. The case of Aborigine-outsider intermarriage in Taiwan provides an occasion to analyze the role of interethnic unions in territorial expansion in both early modern and modern settings.
