Sri Lanka in 1998: political stalemate and economic drift
Article Abstract:
Political standoff and economic crisis dominated Sri Lanka's affairs in 1998. The political impasse was evident in Pres Chandrika Kumaratunga's proposed constitutional reforms for devolving power to nine provinces and granting a certain degree of autonomy to the Tamil-dominated northeastern part of the country. The initiatives had been opposed by both the opposition United National Party and the separatist Liberation Tigers for different reasons. Another sign of political stalemate was the failure of major political parties to reach any consensus on the ethnic issue. This amid a worsening economy, although Kumaratunga's administration introduced measures based on a privatized, outward-looking approach.

Sri Lanka in 1994: a mandate for peace
Article Abstract:
The United National Party's (UNP) 17-year rule in Sri Lanka effectively ended with its defeat in the 1994 parliamentary elections by the opposition People's Alliance (PA) led by the Sri Lanka Freedom Party's Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga. The victory gives the PA the mandate to find a peaceful settlement to the 11-year old civil war being waged by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. The new administration continued the UNP's open-economy policies. Moreover, it started investigating charges of human rights abuses and corruption.
