The 1995 municipal election in West Bengal: the left front is down
Article Abstract:
The results of the 1995 municipal election in West Bengal, India, reveal significant electoral reverses for the long dominant Left Front (LF). The coalition of Marxist-Leninist parties headed by the Communist Party of India-Marxist has been in power since 1977, but won in only 40 (53%) of the 75 municipalities in the 1995 election. In contrast, the Congress Party captured 31 or 41% of the municipalities, up from 22% in 1990. The weakening of the LF can be attributed to its ineffectiveness in resolving civic problems.
