The Temple of Confucius and pictorial biographies of the sage
Article Abstract:
Pictorial biographies of Confucius entitled 'Sheng-chi t'u', appeared in the late Ming period and were officially enshrined at the Ch'u-fu temple for posterity. Their installation at the celebrated Temple of Confucius following a ban on sculptural icons, attested to their instructional and inspirational value. Changing visual culture and developments related to the official cult of Confucius increased their importance. The new visual rhetoric was intended to deify Confucius against a reinvigorated Buddhism and to provide alternatives to the abolished use of sculptured icons in the temples.
