The Bates and Lovekin Families: First Settlers of Clarke Township
Article Abstract:
Clarke Township, Ontario was opened to settlement in 1796. One early family was the Bates who were originally from Kent, England but had lived for several generations in New England. They were not United Empire Loyalists but were likely motivated to move by Governor Simcoe's offer of free land. They inter-married with the Lovekin family that came directly from Ireland and settled in Clarke Township at the same time.
