The dynamics of public opinion, political parties, and media in transitional Hong Kong
Article Abstract:
Hong Kong's political framework has been marked by profound changes in its governmental and electoral structures since 1985 even as the island nation made the transition from colonial government to communist governance. The UK's slow and cautious method of introducing political reform in Hong Kong has, however, created room for political participation and triggered democratization in the island's government. The interplay among the public, media and political parties in contemporary Hong Kong is evaluated.

Hong Kong in 1996: structuring the future
Article Abstract:
China has taken control of the shaping of Hong Kong's future under Chinese sovereignty. One of the first steps it has taken was to fill the Preparatory Committee with many pro-China and pro-status quo members. China-backed Tung Chee-hwa was later chosen as the first chief executive of Chinese Hong Kong. Other significant developments in 1996 were improved relations between China and the UK, as well as between the Hong Kong Democratic Party and the Chinese leadership.

Perceptions of universal suffrage and functional representation in Hong Kong: A confused public?
Article Abstract:
Most of the societies in Hong Kong advocate the universal suffrage that 'one person, one vote', but many also advocate the preservation of functional constituency, that selection of some legislative members by special groups on the basis of their trade or occupation. The functional constituency permits overrepresentation of certain groups or functions in the legislature, which violates the democratic principle of 'one person, one vote' and hence, universal suffrage.
