Carry me back: nostalgia for the Old South in nineteenth-century popular culture
Article Abstract:
The nostalgic longing for the Old South that resounded in the plantation melodies of the carry me back tradition found a broader echo in the 19th century popular culture. The elevation of the Old South into an imaginary remove was a response to the turbulent conditions of the post-Civil War years. Nostalgic evocation for the antebellum South was evident in the parlor songs and the plantation pastoral literary tradition that developed in post-Reconstruction America. The idealization of a symbolic past creates the myth of the Old South.

State of the art: paradigms lost? British-American colonial history and the 'Encyclopedia of the North American Colonies.'
Article Abstract:
'Encyclopedia of the North American Colonies' features individual contributions from almost 200 experts on the topic of the American past, particularly its British-American colonial history. The encyclopedia aims to facilitate a more comprehensive understanding of American colonial heritage by including recent writings on this topic. The editor is to be commended for providing a widely diverse overview of the dynamism of the early modern world, although it does not exactly restore intellectual coherence to the field.
