The rise and fall of democracy in Jammu and Kashmir
Article Abstract:
The rise and fall of democracy in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir can be attributed to a political power struggle between state and central government elites. The first free and fair elections in Jammu and Kashmir were held in 1977 when the Congress Party and the National Conference vied for control of the government. These two parties would meet again in the 1983 elections that were marred by violence and irregularities. The ouster of National Conference head Farooq Abdullah from power by the central government precipitated the decline of democracy in the state.

Elite-court relations in India
Article Abstract:
The relationship between India's elite and its justice system is dominated by irony and vacillation. It depends on the elite's need for legitimacy and for resolving legal disputes. Moreover, the elite's manipulation of the judiciary to regain political legitimacy diminishes the court's credibility and ability to resolve disputes. The transformation of political entities, the restoration of their credibility and the preservation of democracy largely depends on the elite's attitude towards the courts.
