The urban poor and militant Hinduism in early twentieth-century Uttar Pradesh
Article Abstract:
The revival of Hinduism in northern India's Uttar Pradesh between the world wars resulted from the increased numbers of urban poor and their growing power within society. The participating Hindus were not a cohesive group but came from many diverse and conflicting sectors of the community. Contention between Hindus developed over caste and power issues as well as variations of doctrine. The transformation of Hinduism into a more militant religion was brought about by the urban poor, who felt marginalized by the rest of society.
