Tourism and export-led growth: the case of Cyprus, 1976-1988
Article Abstract:
The experience of the tourism industry in Cyprus was discussed to show that tourism could be a service-led strategy for economic growth. Statistics were presented to show tourism's direct impact on Cyprus' gross domestic product, employment and foreign exchange earnings. Tourism's indirect effects on several other economic activities in Cyprus were also discussed. It was suggested that tourism could be considered as a form of service export, and its development, together with an understanding of its environmental and social impacts, would be beneficial to small island economies.
