Turkey and Iran during the Cold War
Article Abstract:
A discussion of Turkish-Iranian relations during the Cold War is presented. Relations between the two countries is a marriage of convenience starting with the Saadabad Pact of 1937, the Central Treaty Alliance (CENTO) and the Regional Cooperation Development (RCD) of 1964. However, by the time the Shah of Iran was ousted in 1979, trade between the two countries was almost nonexistent. Both countries also preferred to have separate dealings with the US and the western European countries rather than through a common platform such as the CENTO or RCD.
