Women in Turfan during the Sixth to Eighth centuries: A look at their activities outside the home
Article Abstract:
Excavation of the Astana-Karakhoja graveyards at the oasis of Turfan has produced a variety of information which can be examined to draw light on the role of women between the sixth and eighth centuries. Tomb inscriptions and epitaphs over the two centuries developed from simply name, date of death and details of her husband, to a description of the deceased's conduct of life and virtues. Other documents which offer insight into women in the period in question include household registers, contracts, and taxation documents.
