A Wessex tale of Auld Reekie
Article Abstract:
Former BBC drama producer Andrew Eaton has linked with director Michael Winterbottom to fulfil a long-standing ambition to produce films. They are currently working on a theatrical feature based on Thomas Hardy's 'Jude the Obscure.' This film, with a budget of just over 4.5 million pounds sterling, is being shot on location in Edinburgh. It was not possible to make the film in Dorset, where the book is set, as Eaton and Winterbottom wanted it to be wide screen, and the right sort of landscape for that format no longer exists in Dorset. The buildings in Edinburgh are also very appropriate for the progressively darker atmosphere which Eaton wishes to create.

All that glisters could be gold
Article Abstract:
The British film industry often nurtures talent which is then exploited by Hollywood, according to film director Sir David Puttnam. He believes that there is a danger that this could happen with education, which is likely to be the most promising growth area of the film industry over the next two decades. He and fellow film directors Ken Loach and Michael Apted recently took part in a masterclass at Granada's Manchester studios, where issues including the fact that British feature films continue to operate in a niche market were discussed.

High-concept high roller
Article Abstract:
Film producer Don Simpson, who died recently at the age of 52, was seen by many observers as personifying the Hollywood culture of the 1980s, and even as playing a role in defining the spirit of that decade. He had a reputation as a womaniser and drug abuser, and was very dismissive of people who were not entirely successful. He was associated with some of the most profitable films ever made, and became a multi-millionaire.
